So what gives?
In 2016, what goals are you growing in your garden?
According to Statistic Brain, 45% of Americans have a resolution every New Year's Day. Half of those will have walked away from their resolution by this time. Only about 8% of resolutioners manage to keep at it and succeed by the end of the year. Whether your vow is to workout more, loss weight, write a novel, spend less, or travel more, the vast majority of American's won't even make it a month.
So what gives?
Writing isn't about taking classes from others, knowing terms, or having a Master's degree in English. It's a lot simpler than that.
Given the flaws in America's student loan lending system, it probably won't shock any of you that I was hesitant to go to college after high school. Student debt and student loans follow their own rules; here in America, they can follow you through bankruptcy and follow their own, barbaric ways of calculating interest. The thought scared 17 year old me, trying to pick a college. I knew my parents would pay for the first few years, but I was never a good student. How much would this end up costing me in the end (Spoiler alert: $22,000 when all is said an done)?
Writing freelance at home isn't always about having more time to spend with friends and family; sometimes it is because writing freelance is a call, despite all the hard work.
Freelance usually means working from home. Working from home usually means you don't have a set schedule. No set schedule usually means you end up the one running the errands, taking the kids to school, taking the car into the shop... Although it might be part of why you wanted to work from home in the first place, the "since you're home, could you?" chores start to stack up really fast. So how do you keep them from overtaking your whole life?
Is your New Year's Resolution to start a new novel or novella? Here's a little help to get you started.
Settling down in front of your laptop or notebook and staring at the blank page in front of you, you feel confident. There will soon be words on your paper to fill the void: words about fantasy worlds or romance or war. People will fall in love and die on this paper, and `you are ready to get started.
But no words seem to show up.
What's up with that? You did everything right, so you sit for a while, waiting for inspiration. You may get a few words down, but the emptiness of the page is so daunting, you end up giving up. Maybe next year you'll be able to write your award winning novel you've been dreaming of.
Have you ever tried a ridiculous diet?
Charlotte Palermino, a writer for Cosmo, recently wrote an article titled I Only Ate Pizza for a Week and I Lost 5 Pounds. Her results are almost exactly as you would expect:
"My cleanse was a "success," if you could call it that. Don't hate me, but I lost 5 pounds. I slimmed down not because pizza is some undiscovered super food, but because I was actually consuming fewer calories. Isabel Smith, MS, RD, CDN, told me that part (or all) of my weight loss was probably due to cutting out wine and sugar. "
