And it was delicious!
If you haven’t tried homemade pizza dough out yourself, you should. Try it tonight for dinner. You’ll be surprised at how versicle and easy it is.
Homemade pizza dough:
1 cup of water water
1 packet of active dry yeast
1 tablespoon of honey or sugar or other natural sweetener (artificial sweeteners won’t work)
1 tablespoon olive oil
3 cups of flour
1-2 teaspoons of salt
Additional crust flavorings (I use garlic powder, parsley, and sometimes rosemary)
Extra olive oil
Drop the yeast, olive oil, and sugar into the warm water and stir a little. Leave it sit for about 15 minutes on the counter while you cut up pizza toppings, put away the dishes, or whatever you need to do. The yeast will proof and grow, and will start to grow and bubble. It will have a strong beer flavor bubbling up from it.
Add the flour and salt to a mixing bowl. Dump in the wet ingredients and mix. Here you can add any extras you would like to your dough. Since pizza dough is a little bland by itself, don’t be afraid of flavor. Throw in some garlic powder for a little extra flavor, or use half all purpose flour and half whole wheat for a heartier flavor. Try adding herbs! The only limit is your imagination!
You can either kneed the dough by hand or put it into your electric mixer with the dough attachment (it kind of looks like Captain Hook’s hook from Peter Pan). After the dough is kneaded, put it back into the bowl, set it aside, covered with a hand towel, and let it sit for 15-30 minutes while you get your toppings ready.
Spread olive oil over the pan. Stretch, roll, or throw the dough up into the air in circles to make your pizza crust (I use a rolling pin). Add sauce and toppings and bake at about 375 degrees for about 30 minutes. This time depends on the thickness of your crust and toppings. Watch it carefully. As soon as the bottom crust starts to brown, leaving it in for another five minutes.
Here are some fabulous ideas I’ve tried in my kitchen:
- Add BBQ sauce instead of tomato sauce, then add chicken, shredded basil, cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes, and sprinkle on some oregano. Sometimes I even add a little raw spinach that's bee shredded.
- Add olive oil, crushed or powdered garlic and basil to the pizza. Top with sliced tomatoes and Mozzarella. Delicious!
- Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, other shredded cheeses, parsley, and olive oil then cut into thin rectangles. Now you have cheese sticks!
- Roll your pizza crust into logs and bake for awesome bread sticks.
-Cook up some bacon (I use turkey bacon) so it's crispy and a little overdone. Crumble it over you pizza with some red sauce, mozzarella, grated Parmesan cheese, basil, and have a yummy bacon pizza.
